Web Interface vs Functionality

3 Simple Interface Upgrades to Improve your Website

First, lets define what we mean by Interface and Functionality.  Interface, or user interface, is what the user will see when they are on your web page.  This is essentially the design.  Functionality is the purpose that your web page is designed or expected to fulfill.  For example, the interface of this blog is what you, the reader, will view.  The functionality is the features that I, the writer, can use to create and post the blog, as well as how you can interact using the comment section or through the links that are clickable.

Now that we've defined the Interface and Functionality, which is more important?  The answer, as you may have expected, is BOTH.  The look and feel of a web page can be just as important as the functionality.  A poorly designed site will scare users away before they even try to use it.  Or, a poorly designed interface can lead to frustration and misuse of the site, which will turn potential customers into angry visitors that will probably share their bad experience with others.

Even simple changes can affect the user experience of a web page. What kind of simple changes can be made to improve the Interface of your web page? Let’s look at some recent interface updates made to ApogeeINVENT’s free secure sharing service, 1ty.me (One Time).

Simple interface updates that can improve user experience:

1.  Background Color.  See how the simple change from blue to dark grey really helped the header and footer stand out in the page below?  Contrast is an important element to use in design.  It can emphasize important parts of your page, and make your overall design ‘pop’.

Background is a simple interface upgrade.

2.  Nicely Designed Buttons.  Buttons have several advantages over links: They stand out better, they look nicer, and they can be used to persuade a viewer to click.  Be sure to use buttons for the most important page navigation / call to action.  Here are some tips on how to create great buttons

Buttons are an important interface upgrade.

3.  Font.  Choosing the right font, and the right font size, is very important.  Users skim pages looking for the most important or relative parts.  Small or hard to read fonts, no matter how attractive, will be a deterrent to users.

Paying attention to the details can make a big difference in the success of your website.  Try making some simple upgrades to your web pages and see how your users respond!

In the meantime, if you need to share some secure information like passwords or usernames, try using our free secure note-sharing service, 1ty.me!  We know you'll like both the new Interface and the Functionality!  Learn more about how it works in the brief video below created by our own President Dwight Calwhite:
